Mustang Island is considered a surfer’s paradise. Port Aransas Beach beach is a 3 to 4-hour drive from Austin. There are surfing rentals, lessons, and camps on the coast. Rent surfboards or shop for surfing clothes, boards, and accessories at the BoardHouse. You can also enroll in the Fall Surf Camp if you are new to the sport. Overall, it is a great place for surfers of all skill levels.

Bird Island Basin

Corpus Cristi, TX

Master windsurfing at Bird Island Basin. The warm, shallow water and steady wind are perfect for the sport. Bird Island Basin is part of Padre Island and has a surf shop, kayak launching site, and boat ramp. It also has a campground, so you could stay a few days while enjoying the water. The island is about four hours away from Austin.

Matagorda Bay

Matagorda, TX

For powerful waves for advanced and professional surfers, Matagorda Bay is the spot. The one-of-a-kind barrels and steep drops make it a popular destination for surfers. Aside from this, you can access the best peak on the south side of the river. Do watch out for gators when you are paddling across. You can be in Matagorda Bay after about three hours of driving from Austin.

 An ideal spot for surfers seeking peace is Port Mansfield. The town’s surfing spots are out of the way. You won’t find any nearby shops, so bring enough supplies. Surfers can choose to paddle in the cove or jump from the jetty. The surfing destination is a 5-hour drive from Austin.
